If you are a young leader in the arts - don't miss this exciting event! Figuring It Out is a networking - information-sharing - learning gathering for emerging leaders from every corner of the state. This event is part of a grassroots movement to empower young leaders and raise the profile of the arts in Wisconsin and nationally. Reconnect with old friends and meet new ones, and get more connected to the people and information you need to know to do your work.

Arts Wisconsin, Wisconsin Arts Board and the Overture Center for the Arts are teaming up to host Figuring It Out, an "Emerging Leader Creative Conversation" for Wisconsin’s young arts leaders, on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the Overture Center for the Arts in downtown Madison, WI. This second annual confab will bring together emerging arts leaders from across Wisconsin to discuss challenges specific to their age group and experience and issues regarding the arts in their communities.

This is a great opportunity for Wisconsin’s young arts leaders to:

· learn more about pressing issues in the field, in the state and in the world that affect their work

· get some critical leadership skills they need now and in the future

· strengthen professional relationships

· engage with an enduring network of people who believe in this work

This “creative conversation” recognizes the collective drive that occupies the vibrant and innovative minds of the next generation of arts leaders. The gathering will allow young colleagues to discuss community issues and challenges specific to them, compare experiences in the field, and brainstorm how to connect with the greater community of young leaders locally, statewide and regionally.

The conference will feature speakers and sessions on the topics of leadership, the role of creativity in 21st century economic development, education and quality of life; entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. Featured speakers include: Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton (invited), chair of the Wisconsin Arts Board; Andrew Taylor, director of the UW-Madison Bolz Center for Arts Administration; and Marti of Next Generation Consulting, a strategic planning firm based in Madison.

Convened and hosted by Arts Wisconsin, Wisconsin Arts Board and the Overture Center for the Arts, as part of Americans for the Arts' "Creative Conversations" program.

o 1:30 pm MTV meets Mozart: How to develop 20 and 30'something patrons, with Marti of Next Generation Consulting, Madison

Is your arts organization struggling to attract and engage younger arts audiences? You’re not alone. The average U.S. arts patron is 52 years old…and getting older. What are progressive arts and cultural organizations doing to develop next audiences? Learn from NGC’s leading arts consultant, Marti, who will share results from a groundbreaking three-year project in Indianapolis designed to engage 20-40 year olds in the arts. At the end of this session, participants will:

• Learn low-cost, high-value enhancements you can make to your website and your venue to delight younger patrons.
• Understand the five phases of an arts and culture experience, and how to enhance each phase.
• Know the three things younger patrons crave from their arts and cultural experiences (and older generations want, too!)

o 2:30 pm Why you need to be an advocate for the arts: an update on the issues that affect emerging leaders – results of the elections, upcoming Legislative and budget seasons, and what to do about those issues, with Anne Katz of Arts Wisconsin

o 3 pm What do you want from an Emerging Leader Network and what will you do to make it happen? (small groups)

o 4 pm adjourn and arrangements for shopping and dining later in the evening!
