Art is not a frill – it’s part of the solution: surviving, thriving and speaking up for the arts in these "interesting" times
A new and useful presentation for Wisconsin’s arts sector!
Description: Wisconsin's arts sector – artists, arts organizations, arts programs, creative entrepreneurs of all kinds - is feeling the effects of the tough financial challenges faced by our state, our nation, and the world in general. Nonprofit arts organizations, and local and college departments, are faced with decreased donations, funding and other resources necessary to move organizational missions and services forward, as they struggle with increased demands for services and programs with limited or even scare resources.
Tough times force hard choices. And as we are in the midst of some the toughest times most of us have ever seen; even arts leaders and organizations accustomed to making much of little are finding the repercussions of the unfolding economic downturn are likely to pose unprecedented challenges for years to come.
But if there ever was a time that we needed the arts - it's now. We’ve got a great story to tell. Creativity, innovation, imagination and teamwork are the tools needed – not just in the arts, but everywhere – to move forward into better times. What can each of us do – what can our organizations do – what can our communities do – what can our state do - to survive and even thrive? The opportunities are out there - we just have to find ways to make them happen. It’s critical that Wisconsin's arts sector strategize, plan, collaborate, and continue to speak up for the arts and arts education as “part of the solution.”
Anne Katz, director of Arts Wisconsin, the state's arts service, advocacy and development organization, will discuss strategies, ideas, best practices, resources, opportunities, questions, and inspiration to help arts leaders and entrepreneurs plan and manage, and move forward, in these “interesting” times.
